London Indian Film Festival – Celebrating Indian Cinema’s 100th Year and More
London will host Europe’s largest platform for Indian cinema, the London Indian Film Festival from July 18 to July 25 to showcase India’s Independent cinema and also celebrate the centennial achievements of Indian cinema.
So the UK audiences especially the Londoners are set for a treat of coveted, cutting-edge films made by India’s hottest talents.
India’s Indie film movement is talent packed and goes beyond the stereotyped Bollywood Hindi film industry and presents a kaleidoscope of new films that challenge, shock and exhilarate with its narrative of a realistic India covering its sublime diversity. For the first time in history, the festival will also tour the cities of Bradford and Glasgow.
Opening Film
The LIFF will have the opening film in Amit Kumar’s “Monsoon Shootout” and will close with the omnibus “Bombay Talkies,” featuring the works of Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap.
The opening film will be screened at West End’s historic Cineworld Haymarket with more screenings at Cineworld cinemas, Shaftesbury Avenue, BFI Southbank, Wandsworth, Staples Corner, Wood Green, and the O2, the Peckamplex and ICA near the Pall Mall.
Life of Pi Actor
On 20th July, the interaction with Indian actor Irfan Khan who acted in Oscar Winner “Life of Pi” will be a highlight. Khan will be the guest at the ‘In conversation’ programme at the BFI Southbank. He is one of the very few Indians who has proved himself in Hollywood, British and Indian cinema. He will talk to Asif Kpaadia, award winning director of Senna.
In addition to Hindi films there will be entries from Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi languages. Yet another highlight of the festival will be is ‘Life in Pictures’ Masterclass by leading Indian Director Adoor Gopalakrishnan on 19th July at BFI Southbank.
100 Years of Indian Cinema
The London Indian Film Festival will make a significant tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema. It was a century ago, on 3rd May 1913 that India’s first silent film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ was produced.
