Open Garden Squares Successfully Showcases London’s Grassy Gem Gardens
Open Garden Squares 2014 that took place on 14-15 June 2014 roused the curiosity on London gardens of London. The two day event opened access to 200 gardens ranging from the historic to the traditional and brand new across London’s 25 boroughs.
This high profile Open Garden Squares 2014 by London Parks & Gardens Trust had been taking place since 1998 as a regular fixture. Seeking to increase the appreciation of London’s green spaces the event this year also provided the opportunity for non-residents to explore many private gardens and enjoy them in a relaxed atmosphere to the accompaniment of open-air concerts, craft displays and wine tastings.
Amazing Variety
The grassy gems open for the public were private gardens, roof gardens, urban wildlife and ecology centers and gardens from historic buildings, institutions, schools and shops. All the participating gardens retained their individuality with stalls, music, entertainment and arts with excellent food and drink to amuse the visitors.
Weekend Opportunity
Certainly it was the opportunity to scratch London’s green underbelly and familiarize with many Victorian communal gardens like Arundel and Ladbroke Gardens, Cleveland Gardens, and Stanley Crescent Garden.
New Open Garden Squares for 2014
There was considerable interest on the walled garden at St Angela’s Ursuline School in Newham and the sustainable roof garden of Nomura Building’s in the City.
For football lovers delight came from the modern garden surrounding Highbury Stadium Square in Islington.
Garden of 10, Downing Street
The gardens which were beyond the purview of the single ticket at Open Garden Squares were the Highbury Stadium Square and No.10 Downing Street which had ticket ballots and was closed on 29 May.
The garden at No 10 Downing Street had its mystery and element of curiosity with its inaccessibility and pedigree. There rapturous response when options to visit the gardens were offered through a prized ballot.
High Gate
The High gates’ Queen’s Wood Lodge Organic Garden elicited lot of attention. The prize-winning garden was true gem tucked behind the old keeper’s lodge in Muswell Hill.
After restoration in 2002 it had a wide renewal in terms of plots of fruit bushes vegetables, herbs and flowerbeds surrounded by woodland and wildflowers.
