Kensington Area Information
Moving west along the southern edge of Hyde Park takes you past the gilded rotunda of the Royal Albert Hall and into the exquisitely appointed neighbourhood of Kensington. From Kensington Palace to Holland House, it's prime real estate all the way and the main shopping artery that follows in this direction is bursting with designer fashion labels, luxury retail outlets and cordon-bleu restaurants. Although less than three miles away from the centre of the city, large parts of Kensington still retain that much sought after "village" feel that is an irresistible lure to super-solvent corporate clients and wealthy young families.
The elegance of both Georgian and Victorian styles of architecture in the form of stucco-decorated houses and red brick mansions make Kensington a natural habitat for embassies, art galleries and exclusive clubs. It is and always has been a wealthy area, no doubt to the quiet satisfaction of its inhabitants and has resisted the homogenisation effect that other areas have experienced in the name of progress. A prime example of this stance is Kensington Church Street which is filled with quaint antique shops, book shops and cafes, despite being the main road link north to Notting Hill. As well as being an attractive rental location in its own right, Kensington also lies adjacent to other popular areas such as Earls Court, Shepherd's Bush and Hammersmith. However only its' southern neighbour Chelsea can rival the beauty of its architecture or the desirability of its' streets. Phillimore Gardens and Edwardes Square to name just two are among the capitals most prestigious addresses.
The main transport hub is Kensington High St Tube station with fast access to Victoria and Paddington overground rail links and therefore to Gatwick and Heathrow airports respectively.
