The areas situated immediately behind the Greenwich peninsula may lack riverside views, but they share similar amenities and travel connections. When the powers that be decided to terminate the new DLR train network at Lewisham, they opened up an area that was historically attractive, yet somewhat off the radar.

Blackheath village is separated from the Royal park of Greenwich by the ominous-sounding Shooters Hill, a name that refers to a time in the 18th century when highway robbery was common. It still has a secluded beauty but is now home to the same eclectic collection of bistros, galleries and microbreweries that make neighbouring Greenwich such a cultural draw.

Corporate residents requiring more space can now trade their high-rise rental apartments for more green and spacious habitats as these areas offer a variety of accommodation options. They will still be well served by the DLR terminus at Lewisham and the Jubilee line Tube stop at Surrey Quays which provide easy access to the City and the West End. The period charm of Blackheath focuses on the dreamy spire of St John's church, the immaculate Georgian terrace of the Paragon overlooking the Heath and the large Victorian houses that make up the Cator Estate.

The village atmosphere here extends to the overground rail station which hosts a farmers market in the car park. Picking up a selection of organic produce after a foray into central London is one of the things that make the area such a refreshing option for renters. From airy Victorian conversions to edgy new property developments, the immediate area bordering Greenwich contains many examples of high standard accommodation with budgets slightly lower than its maritime neighbour.
